About the Book

The book asks how teaching for sustainability and global citizenship can advance social-ecological justice through alternative paradigms. It examines how the environmental crisis affects formal, non-formal and informal education from a human rights perspective.

The book introduces value-creating global citizenship education, a pedagogical approach that builds on and extends the UN Sustainable Development Goals. A central aim is fostering resilience and hope through engaged relationships between learners and their environments.

It draws examples from several sources:

  • Indigenous knowledge
  • Diverse ecological worldviews
  • The Earth Charter
  • The Soka Amazon Institute
  • The United Nations Harmony with Nature Knowledge Network

The book offers practical guidance for educators and policymakers, including teaching and curriculum guidelines for integrating intercultural perspectives and developing a global outlook.

New Publication: Handbook on Global Citizenship Education (Edward Elgar, 2026)

The Handbook on Global Citizenship Education, edited by William Gaudelli (Lehigh University, USA) and Ricardo Römhild (University of Bonn, Germany), has been published by Edward Elgar Publishing as part of the Elgar Handbooks in Education series.

About the Handbook

The Handbook offers a broad overview of current thinking and practice in teaching and learning for a global society. Its contributors, from around the world, examine the ethical responsibility of Global Citizenship Education (GCE) to support both human and ecological flourishing. The volume traces how the field has developed and situates it within today’s political and social climate. It also explores conceptual framings, practical applications and emerging challenges, and considers questions of power, sustainability and technology.

The Handbook is organised in four parts:

  • Theoretical and Conceptual Basis
  • Issues in GCE
  • Illustrations of Praxis
  • Curriculum and Policy

It is aimed at students and scholars of international education, curriculum studies and global citizenship education, as well as practitioners and policymakers.

Chapter: An intercultural and ethical framework for sustainability and Global Citizenship Education

Contributions include the closing chapter of the Curriculum and Policy section (Chapter 29). The chapter presents an intercultural and ethical framework that brings together sustainability and Global Citizenship Education. It builds on the author’s ongoing work on value-creating global citizenship education and on integrating diverse cultural perspectives into curriculum and teaching.
